Great Women in American History

I found this complete list of great women in American History. From this list, I am creating a list of great women that we will be studying.

Today, we are focusing on Helen Keller; here's a cool Helen Keller lesson plan that is a great way to learn about Helen Keller.

As a beginning activity, I had my kids all work together to look up Helen Keller on the Internet. Then, we discussed important aspects of her life, including the introduction of Anne Sullivan into her life, and her pivotal moment when she first had her hand placed under the water pump and Anne Sullivan repeatedly spelled "W-A-T-E-R" into her hand.

We discussed how Helen Keller successfully overcame both her blindness and deafness, and graduated from college. She traveled the world, and wrote a number of books. Helen Keller is an inspiration to us all, and that is why she is one of the great women in American History.
